Two worlds under a single roof – experiencing daily life in a baroque castle
Following the grand opening on June 29, 2025, visitors can experience a completely new tour and hands-on history exhibit that goes by the title of “Cowsheds and Silver Plates – Nobility and Daily Life in Rammenau.” The contrasting lifestyles of the castle residents and their servants can be interactively experienced up close and personal. Scenes from everyday life acquaint guests more closely with the history of the nobility and their servants. This time travel tour, suited for both young and old, is so much more than just an exhibition. Playground equipment in the Steward’s Cottage, regional specialties in the Schlosscafé, or relaxing walks in the park make a visit to Rammenau Castle an experience for all the senses.
Stories of nobility and daily life
Back in 1777, the day begins in different ways for the various people of Rammenau Baroque Castle: for some, it starts with hard work in the cowshed and in the fields. For others, it starts with hot chocolate served in fine porcelain in the heated salon, where the next celebrations are being planned and paperwork is completed at the desk.
The new permanent exhibition adds life to this contrast between nobility and the subjects: stories from the castle and the Steward’s Cottage are retold by using display cases that are reminiscent of Baroque peep boxes, interactive stations, and theatrical scenes. An impressive experience for guests of all ages.
Take a peek through the keyhole – curiosity is welcomed
What secrets can be aired behind the doors of the count's bedroom? Look forward to a sneak peek at the exhibition here – but psst, don’t overdo it! There are many surprises waiting to be discovered: rooms in stately furnishings and multimedia highlights that offer a great deal to look at, marvel at, and play with.
We invite you to linger and enjoy the exciting audio spots in the Steward’s Cottage and park. Former castle residents and other contemporary witnesses report on the period after 1945, when noblemen no longer owned the castle. And the gardener reveals some secrets, too.
A masterpiece returns home – art and history united
After numerous decades, the oil painting “Farmers' Delegation at the First Socialist Artists' Brigade”, by the Sorbian artist, Horst Schlossar, returns to its place of origin in 1953. The painting impressively depicts the changed circumstances after 1945: instead of noble lords, farmers are standing in the stately castle rooms, examining the picturesque depiction of a large agricultural machine.
On loan from Rammenau municipality, this piece of contemporary history can now once again be experienced where it was painted, and where art, culture, and memories all unite.
